Today, the World Health Organization issued an emergency use listing (EUL) for NVX-CoV2373, expanding the basket of WHO-validated vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The vaccine, named CovovaxTM, is produced by the Serum Institute of India under licence from Novavax and is part of the COVAX facility portfolio, giving a much-needed boost to ongoing efforts to vaccinate more people in lower-income countries.
WHOs EUL procedure assesses the quality, safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines and is a prerequisite for COVAX vaccine supply. It also allows countries to expedite their own regulatory approval to import and administer COVID-19 vaccines.
Even with new variants emerging, vaccines remain one of the most effective tools to protect people against serious illness and death from SARS-COV-2, said Dr Maringela Simo, WHO Assistant-Director General for Access to Medicines and Health Products. This listing aims to increase access particularly in lower-income countries, 41 of which have still not been able to vaccinate 10% of their populations, while 98 countries have not reached 40%.
CovovaxTM was assessed under the WHO EUL procedure based on the review of data on quality, safety and efficacy, a risk management plan, programmatic suitability, and manufacturing site inspections carried out by the Drugs Controller General of India. The Technical Advisory Group for Emergency Use Listing (TAG-EUL), convened by WHO and made up of experts from around the world, has determined that the vaccine meets WHO standards for protection against COVID-19, that the benefit of the vaccine far outweighs any risks, and that the vaccine can be used globally.
CovovaxTM is a subunit of the vaccinedeveloped by Novavaxand theCoalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations(CEPI). It requires two dosesand is stable at 2 to 8C refrigerated temperatures. The vaccine uses a novel platform and is produced by creating an engineered baculovirus containing a gene for a modified SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
The originator product produced by Novavax, named NuvaxovidTM, is currently under assessment by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). WHO will complete its own assessment of this vaccine once the EMA has issued its recommendation.
A meeting of WHOs Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) this week also reviewed the vaccine. SAGE formulates specific policies and recommendations for vaccines use in populations (i.e. recommended age groups, intervals between doses, specific groups such as pregnant and lactating women) and will issue recommendations for NuvaxovidTM/CovovaxTM in the coming days.
WHO emergency use listing
The emergency use listing (EUL) procedure assesses the suitability of novel health products during public health emergencies. The objective is to make medicines, vaccines and diagnostics available as rapidly as possible to address the emergency while adhering to stringent criteria of safety, efficacy and quality. The assessment weighs the threat posed by the emergency as well as the benefit that would accrue from the use of the product against any potential risks.
The EUL pathway involves a rigorous assessment of late phase II and phase III clinical trial data, as well as substantial additional data on safety, efficacy, quality and a risk management plan.These data are reviewed by independent experts and WHO teams who consider the current body of evidence on the vaccine under consideration, the plans for monitoring its use, and plans for further studies.
As part of the EUL process, the company producing the vaccine must commit to continue to generate data to enable full licensure and WHO prequalification of the vaccine. The WHO prequalification process will assess additional clinical data generated from vaccine trials and deployment on a rolling basis to ensure the vaccine meets the necessary standards of quality, safety and efficacy for broader availability.

Dec.18 marks the anniversary of the first COVID-19 vaccine administered in Clarke County.
One year later, nearly half the county is fully vaccinated:51% of the population has had at least one doseand 47% are fully vaccinated. Clarke County's vaccination rate islower than Georgiasat 52% full vaccinated.
As ofDec. 16, there have been 141,794 doses, including initial doses and follow-up, administered inAthens-Clarke County.
Booster shots became available for all adults in November.
The Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 20,433 additional doses have been administered in Athens, which includes the booster shotas well as a third dose in the primary vaccine series, which is for immunocompromised individuals.

Of the number of fully vaccinated in the county, 34% have received additional doses. This is higher than Georgias rate, which currently sits at 26%.
At the time the vaccine was first administered in Clarke, there had been a total of 9,217 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 58 COVID-related deaths in Clarke County. As of Dec. 16, there have been 20,589 total antigen and PCR cases and 179 deaths.
In neighboring counties, Oconee County continues to surpass Clarke in its primary vaccine rates, with 65% of residents having had at least one shot and 61% fully vaccinated. But similar to Clarke, 35% of fully vaccinated Oconee residents have received an additional dose.
The COVID-19 vaccine also recently became available to those 5-12 years old.
In Clarke County, the least vaccinated eligible group are those five to nine years old; 20% of this group has had at least one dose of the vaccine. But that rate doubles to 41% at the next age group, which includes children age 10-14.
The vaccination rate then decreases when looking at those 15 to 19 years old who sit at 25% with at least one dose and those from 20 to 24 years old who have a vaccination rate of 24%.
Those 25 to 34 years old are 54% vaccinated with at least one dose and from there, the vaccine rate continues to climb with each increased age group.

COPENHAGEN, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Moderna's (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccine is up to four times more likely to cause inflammation of the heart muscle, a very rare side effect, than its rival vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech (PFE.N), , according to a Danish study published in the British Medical Journal late on Thursday.
The study, in which almost 85% of Danes, or 4.9 million individuals, aged 12 and older participated, investigated the link between mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines and heart inflammation, also known as myocarditis or myopericarditis.
Earlier studies from Israel and the United States have indicated an increased risk of heart inflammation after inoculation with the mRNA-vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

"Vaccination with mRNA-1273 (Moderna's vaccine) was associated with a significantly increased risk of myocarditis or myopericarditis in the Danish population," the study said.
However, the overall risk of getting heart inflammation from the vaccines, both of which are based on mRNA-technology, was low, according to the study, conducted by researchers from Denmark's Statens Serum Institute.
"In general, the rate of myocarditis or myopericarditis was about threefold to fourfold higher for mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccination than that for BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccination," the study said.
The researchers found only 1 case per 71,400 vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech and 1 case per 23,800 vaccinated with Moderna. Most of the cases had been mild, the study said.
Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine was only associated with a higher risk of heart inflammation among women, the study said, contrasting with the results of the studies from Israel and the United States.
The authors said the discrepancy could be explained by the average age of the vaccinated population, time span between the first and second shot or because fewer Danes had tested positive for COVID-19.
"Our findings do not generally overshadow the many benefits that come with being vaccinated," study author Anders Hviid said in a statement.
"One must keep in mind that the alternative of getting an infection with COVID-19 probably also involves a risk of inflammation in the heart muscle," Hviid said.

About 70 ThedaCare employees quit rather than receive the COVID-19 vaccine as the health system had mandated by the end of November.
ThedaCare employs nearly 7,000 people, a spokesperson said Friday, meaning about 99% of their workforce chose to receive the vaccine.
In a statement to the Post Crescent, chief human resources officer Maggie Lund said 29 employees were let go Nov. 26 after failing to get vaccinated against COVID-19. ThedaCare had announced in September that all employees would need the shot to comply with President Joe Biden's requirement that hospitals receiving Medicare and Medicaid funds mandate the vaccine.
Lund estimated that an additional 30 to 40 employees left in the weeks prior to the deadline to avoid getting vaccinated, bringing the total to approximately 70 employees who left because of the mandate.

Short-staffed hospitals are a well-known reality in Wisconsin as COVID-19 cases continue to surge, and Republican lawmakers have repeatedly blamed the vaccine mandates.
In an interview Wednesday with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said a "sizable amount" of the problems "are being prodded by the decisions people are making."
"Vaccine mandate means you have less staff, right?" the Rochester Republican said. "That might be a bad decision that hospitals are making."
A spokesperson for the Wisconsin Hospital Association said in a statement that pandemic stress has driven far more health care workers outthan vaccine requirements.Morning Consult, a survey company, found in an October report that nearly one in five U.S. health care workers have quit the professionsince February 2020, citing burnout, poor pay, and most often, the pandemic itself.
The hospital association said its members reported losing fewer than 2% of their employees due to vaccine mandates. The state's largest health system, Advocate Aurora Health which has hospitals in the Fox Valley lost less than 1% of staff to the mandate.
A spokesperson for Ascension Wisconsin, which also has several Fox Valley locations, declined to share a specific number of employees who were let go because of the mandate but said Friday most had chosen to be vaccinated.
"We want patients to be assured and comforted with the knowledge that Ascension Wisconsin doctors and nurses, other clinicians and associates, working in one of our hospitals or other sites of care, will either be vaccinated against both COVID-19 and influenza, or in the limited instances of exemptions, be complying with additional infection prevention protocols," a statement from the health system said.
No matter the cause, staffing shortages are stretching the region's hospitals thin as the COVID-19 patient census continues to grow. There were 136 patients hospitalized with the virus in the Fox Valley Friday afternoon, according to data from the hospital association.
On a Friday call with community leaders, ThedaCare officials asked that if those listening knew nurses or other health care professionals looking for work, they encourage them to inquire at ThedaCare.

It seems that Kyrie Irving has, at least in part, won his COVID-19 vaccine holdout with the Brooklyn Nets.
Irving, according to ESPNs Adrian Wojnarowski, has started the process to rejoin the team for the first time this season.
Its unclear when Irving will make his season debut, but the team has opted to bring him back on a part-time basis. Irving is not currently allowed to play games in New York due to the citys coronavirus vaccine mandate, so he will just be allowed to participate in away games for the Nets. This means that Irving is almost certainly still unvaccinated.
The Nets had previously said they wouldn't allow Irving to compete part-time. Its unclear when he will officially join the team.
The Nets confirmed the reports in a statement on Friday night.
"After discussions with our coaches players and staff, the organization has decided to have Kyrie Irving rejoin the team for games and practices in which he is eligible to participate," the team said, via The Athletic's Shams Charania. "We arrived at this decision with the full support of our players and after careful consideration of our current circumstances, including players missing games due to injuries and health and safety protocols.
"We believe that the addition of Kyrie will not only make us a better team but allow us to more optimally balance the physical demand on the entire roster. We look forward to Kyrie's return to the lineup, as well as getting our entire roster back on the court."
Irving has not played this season with the Nets due to New Yorks mandate that requires athletes playing in indoor arenas to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The Nets star still hasnt made it clear why he wont get vaccinated, something that has been going on for months now. He did say that he wants to be a voice for the voiceless for those who have lost their jobs due to vaccine mandates. Outside of that very broad reasoning, however, Irving has kept quiet.

New York mayor-elect Eric Adams has said that he doesnt intend to end the mandate when he takes office on Jan. 1, either.
At the beginning of the season, the Nets decided they didnt want Irving to be just a part-time player. He had to be in completely, or not at all.
Now, though, that thinking has clearly changed.
At 21-8, the Nets have the best record in the Eastern Conference. The team is now down seven players, including James Harden, to health and safety protocols, however.
While Irving can certainly help his shorthanded team, he will be at a much higher risk of contracting the coronavirus while doing so especially as several teams across the league are dealing with similar outbreaks. And, as hes still unvaccinated, hed be required to miss more time than his unvaccinated counterparts.
The Nets are two games into a five-game homestand and will host the Orlando Magic on Saturday night. Their next road trip will start in Portland next Thursday before a Christmas Day game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena and then against the Clippers two days later.
Its plausible that Irving will make his debut either in Portland or Los Angeles next week, though he is expected to take his time and must pass multiple coronavirus tests before he's allowed to do so. Irving will have to test negative five straight days before he can join the team, and then will have to get tested every day.

Omicron has become a global threat to public health thanks to a particularly dangerous set of mutations, but where did it come from?

We dont know for sure where or how the omicron variant of the coronavirus acquired such an extensive and dangerous set of mutations before beginning to spread like wildfire around the world, and we may never know. It most likely evolved in a single immunocompromised individual, possibly someone who is HIV positive living somewhere in southern Africa who wasnt receiving effective treatment, but there is no direct evidence for this.
How did we discover the omicron variant?
Researchers in South Africa noticed a small increase in cases in Gauteng province and decided to genetically sequence more samples. They found a variant with a lot of worrying mutations and alerted the world on 25 November. Researchers elsewhere noticed this variant around the same time from sequences uploaded to public databases.
Whats different about it?
Omicron has around 50 mutations compared to the original virus discovered in Wuhan, China, with 30 in the outer spike protein alone. That matters because the spike protein is the target of our antibodies. The extensive changes in omicronsspike protein greatly reduce the effectiveness of the antibodies people have from vaccination or from infection with other variants.
How did it acquire so many mutations?
There are two main hypotheses. The first is that it evolved in a person with a compromised immune system. Normally all viruses are killed when our immune response kicks in fully, but if a persons immune system is weak some viruses can keep replicating in their body and evolve over several months to become much better at evading antibodies.
Is there any evidence this is what happened?
There is no direct evidence, but this process of the coronavirus accumulating mutations has been observed happening in an individual with HIV who wasnt responding to covid-19 treatment. The researchers who discovered omicron have called for efforts to tackle HIV to be stepped up.
Whats the other main idea?
That the virus infected animals of some kind, acquired lots of mutations as it spread among them and then jumped back to people a phenomenon known as reverse zoonosis.
What evidence is there for omicron evolving in animals?
Some of the mutations in the spike proteins are the same as those seen in SARS-Cov-2 viruses that have adapted to spreading in rodents, and specifically mice. But this could just be a coincidence.
Could this have happened in mice in a lab?
Most of the 7 billion people in the world have rodents living near their homes, if not inside them, so there have been countless opportunities for this to happen with mice or rats. Very few labs are doing experiments that involve infecting mice with SARS-Cov-2, and none of them are in southern Africa. In other words, the lab mice idea cant be ruled out but seems highly unlikely.
Are there any other possibilities?
Omicron could have evolved gradually as it spread from person to person in one of the many parts of the world where little or no sequencing is done. But given how infectious it is, its hard to explain why none of its ancestors spread widely enough to reach countries that do more sequencing. Another possibility is that the drug molnupiravir, which works by inducing so many mutations it kills viruses, could have played a part, but there is no evidence to support this speculation.
Where did omicron arise?
The earliest confirmed omicron cases to date were in South Africa and Botswana in the first half of November. However, it is estimated that omicron first started spreading in people in early October. We dont know where that happened. That said, the fact that the first omicron wave is in South Africa does suggest an origin somewhere in the region.
I read that omicron was detected elsewhere before South Africa reported it?
Several countries including the US and the Netherlands have now reported omicron cases from mid November, but these dont predate the earliest southern African cases and are almost all associated with travel from the region. There was a report of omicron being found in Nigeria in October, but this was later said to be a mistake.
