China: WHO experts to arrive for coronavirus origins probe – KTLA

China: WHO experts to arrive for coronavirus origins probe – KTLA

January 12, 2021

Experts from the World Health Organization are due to arrive in China this week for a long-anticipated investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, the government said Monday.

The experts will arrive on Thursday and meet with Chinese counterparts, the National Health Commission said in a one-sentence statement that gave no other details.

It wasnt immediately clear whether the experts would be traveling to the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus was first detected in late 2019.

Negotiations for the visit have long been underway. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed disappointment last week over delays, saying that members of the international scientific team departing from their home countries had already started on their trip as part of an arrangement between the WHO and the Chinese government.

Chinas government has strictly controlled all research at home into the origins of the virus,an Associated Press investigation found, while state-owned media have played up fringe theories that suggest the virus could have originated elsewhere.

The AP investigation found that Chinas government is handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to scientists researching the virus origins in southern China. But it is monitoring their findings and mandating that the publication of any data or research must be approved by a new task force managed by Chinas Cabinet, under direct orders from President Xi Jinping, according to internal documents obtained by the AP.

The culture of secrecy is believed to have delayed warnings about the pandemic, blocked the sharing of information with the WHO and hampered early testing. Australia and other countries have called for an investigation into the origins of the virus, prompting angry responses from Beijing.

After Tedros statement, Chinas Foreign Ministry said that the country was open to a visit by WHO experts, but that it was still working on necessary procedures and relevant concrete plans. Chinas disease experts are currently busy with multiple small-scale virus clusters and outbreaks that have been reported in the past couple of weeks, ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Our experts are wholeheartedly in the stressful battle to control the epidemic, Hua said.

There was no immediate comment from the WHO on Mondays announcement, but U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric had earlier told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is fully supportive of Dr. Tedros and WHOs efforts to get a team in there.

Its very important that as the WHO is in the lead in fighting the pandemic, that it also has a leading role in trying to look back at the roots of this pandemic so we can be better prepared for the next one, Dujarric said. We very much hope that Chinas reported comments that it is working with the WHO and looking for a smooth visit will happen.

The virus origins have been the source of intense speculation, much of it centered around the likelihood that it was carried by bats and passed to humans through an intermediary species sold as food or medicine in traditional Chinese wet markets.

China has largely stemmed new cases of domestic transmission, but said Monday that scores of people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Hebei province, bordering Beijing.

That outbreak comes amid measures to curb the further spread of the virus during next months Lunar New Year holiday. Authorities have called on citizens not to travel, ordered schools closed a week early and conducted testing on a massive scale.

China has recorded 87,536 total cases of the virus, including 4,634 deaths. Hospitals are currently treating 673 people for COVID-19, while 506 others are in isolation and under observation after testing positive without showing symptoms., officials said.

The Hebei outbreak has raised particular concern because of the provinces proximity to Beijing. Parts of the province are under lockdown and interprovincial travel has been largely cut off, with those entering Beijing to work having to show proof of employment and a clean bill of health.

Beijing has also seen a handful of new cases, prompting authorities to lock down some suburban communities and require residents to show negative test results to access grocery stores and other public spaces.

Celtics star Jayson Tatum tests positive for COVID-19 – The Boston Globe

Celtics star Jayson Tatum tests positive for COVID-19 – The Boston Globe

January 10, 2021

Tatum and center Robert Williams, who has also tested positive for COVID-19, will not be present for the game against the Heat, and neither will big men Tristan Thompson and Grant Williams, who were placed in quarantine because of close contact with Robert Williams.

According to the league source, Robert Williams, Grant Williams, Carsen Edwards, and Thompson recently rode in a car together, with Edwards the lone player wearing a mask. Edwards was cleared to play Friday against Washington because he was not considered a close contact. Grant Williams and Thompson, however, were considered risks.

Its uncertain how Tatum contracted the virus, but according to the leagues research by medical experts, its nearly impossible to pass the virus during an NBA game because according to the Center for Disease Controls website, transmission risk is with an individual who has had close contact [within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more].

According to NBA research, players are not in close contact with each other for remotely close to 15 minutes during a game.

Celtics players and other members of the organization were tested twice on Friday. According to the league source, Tatum tested negative in the first test but positive in his second. The team then canceled Saturdays practice and informed members of the organization that the Auerbach Center would be shut down, preventing players from using the facility for treatment or workouts.

Tatum is eighth in the NBA in scoring (26.9 points per game) and with Jaylen Brown has helped the Celtics to a 7-3 start. If Tatum is in quarantine for the full 14 days, he would miss eight games, including a pair of matchups each against the 76ers and Magic. He would be cleared to return on Jan. 25 at Chicago.

The Celtics injury report released Saturday night lists Tatum as doubtful for Sundays game against Miami because of health and safety protocols. The team is likely waiting for confirmation of Tatums positive test. Forwards Brown and Semi Ojeleye and guard Javonte Green were listed as questionable because of health and safety protocols and will need to be cleared by medical officials to play.

Finally, Wizards forward Bradley Beal was held out of Washingtons game against the Miami Heat on Saturday night because of contact tracing to Tatum. The two are close friends and perhaps dined or visited each other prior to Fridays game. The Wizards arrived in Boston on Thursday.

The NBA has had increasing COVID-19 problems since it decided to begin the 2020-21 season outside a controlled bubble. The 76ers were limited to eight players in Saturdays loss to the Nuggets because of contact tracing and injuries. Guard Seth Curry tested positive for COVID-19 this past week.

In Houston, guard John Wall was held out for a week because of contact tracing after he invited teammates to his home for haircuts by a local barber. One of the Rockets who attended later tested positive for COVID-19.

In the NBAs latest round of COVID-19 test results, released Jan. 7, there were four positives out of the 498 players tested since Dec. 30. The NBA does not release the names of players who test positive. Instead, the league places players in quarantine depending on a positive test or contact tracing.

During the bubble, no players tested positive for COVID-19. In that environment, players and team officials were tested daily, and family members were not allowed to visit until the first round of the playoffs, and they had to undergo daily testing once in the compound.

With Tatum out for at least 10 days, the Celtics will have to rely on players such as Green, who recently returned from a stint in quarantine, Ojeleye, and rookie Aaron Nesmith for minutes on the wing. The team is already without All-Star point guard Kemba Walker, who was cleared to begin practicing after missing the first few weeks following a knee procedure, Robert Williams, Grant Williams, and Thompson for at least the next few games.

The Celtics already have the maximum 17 players on their roster, so they would have to waive a player to create a spot. If they dont, the lone option is to play with the roster they have. The NBA mandated the 76ers play the Nuggets despite having five players in COVID-19 protocols, and two more listed as injured. Philadelphia used seven of its eight players in the 115-103 loss, with rookie Tyrese Maxey scoring 39 points in 44 minutes. He had been averaging 15.7 minutes per game.

Tatum, meanwhile, will not be allowed to practice with the Celtics during the quarantine period, and will have to test negative on multiple occasions before returning.

7,110 New COVID-19 Cases Confirmed in Mass., Another 90 Deaths – NBC10 Boston

January 10, 2021

Massachusetts health officials reported more than 7,000 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday just the fourth time the figure has exceeded that mark in a single day, each coming within the past two weeks.

There were 7,110 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state Saturday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported, as well 90 new confirmed coronavirus deaths.

There have now been a total of 12,798 deaths and 407,933 cases, according to DPH.

Another 276 deaths are considered probably linked to COVID-19.

The percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive, on average, fell again Saturday to 7.35%, the department said.

The number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 also dropped, to 2,291. Of that number, 445 were listed as being in intensive care units and 280 are intubated, according to DPH.

More coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, which have continued to climb in the wake of the holiday season, have prompted Massachusetts to set up a pool testing program in schools across the state. This measure aims to expand the net of COVID-19 monitoring and encourage schools to allow in-person learning.

Under the pool testing program outlined by Gov. Charlie Baker on Friday, teachers, staffers and students would be tested in batches of 10. This allows a larger portion of the population to get tested for the virus more efficiently, but would not indicate whether a specific individual has COVID-19.

A handful of school districts are already using pool testing, including Salem, Watertown and Medford.

The new pool testing program will be available to schools next month.

Meanwhile, Baker has extended coronavirus restrictions put in place on Dec. 26 through Jan. 24. These rules limit many businesses to 25% capacity, and set caps on indoor gatherings at 10 people and outdoor gatherings at 25.

Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum tested positive for COVID-19, The Boston Globes Gary Washburn reported Saturday.

Tatum received the positive COVID-19 test Friday night and immediately went into quarantine, according to Washburn. He is still awaiting the results of a confirmation test and is asymptomatic, Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald reported.

With the positive COVID-19 test, Tatum will likely have to quarantine for the next 10-14 days. Saturdays news of Tatums positive test comes a day after center Robert Williams reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus.

Center Tristan Thompson and forward Grant Williams were also forced to quarantine for at least seven days starting on Friday due to the NBAs health and safety protocols. A league source told Washburn that Robert Williams, Grant Williams, Thompson, and guard Carsen Edwards all shared a car ride on the teams recent road trip, with Edwards being the only player wearing a mask during the ride. Edwards was cleared to play Friday night against the Wizards because he wasnt considered a close contact.

In the aftermath of Tatums positive test, the Celtics canceled Saturdays practice and closed the Auerbach Center for use on Saturday. The Celtics matchup against the Heat on Sunday is still scheduled to be played. Players and other members of the organization were tested twice on Friday, according to Washburn.

Tatums positive COVID-19 test also forced Wizards star Bradley Beal to miss their game against the Heat on Saturday. Beal and Tatum spoke in close proximity to each other following Fridays Celtics-Wizards game, causing the league to investigate Beals potential exposure, according to The Athletics Shams Charania.

The quarantine period will force Tatum to miss at least five games, and potentially seven games if he quarantines for 14 days. The Celtics will be without their leading scorer for their upcoming matchups against the Heat, Bulls, Magic (twice), and Knicks. A 14-day quarantine would cause Tatum to miss two games against the 76ers.

Tatum has had a strong start to the new season. His 26.9 points per game is eighth-highest in the league. He scored 32 points in the Celtics win Friday night.

With four players forced to miss games due to COVID-19 or health protocols, the Celtics have just 11 players (including two-way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters) available to play. The league requires teams to have eight players active in order for games to be played.

Pope Francis to have COVID-19 vaccine, says it is the ethical choice for all – Reuters

January 10, 2021

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Saturday he planned to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as early as next week and urged everyone to get a shot, to protect not only their own lives but those of others.

I believe that ethically everyone should take the vaccine, the Pope said in an interview with TV station Canale 5. It is an ethical choice because you are gambling with your health, with your life, but you are also gambling with the lives of others.

Vatican City, the smallest independent county in the world, home to about 450 people including Pope Francis, has said it will shortly launch its own vaccination campaign against the coronavirus.

Next week, the Pope said, we will start doing it here, in the Vatican, and I have booked myself in. It must be done.

Pope Francis, 84, had part of one lung removed during an illness when he was a young man in his native Argentina, making him potentially vulnerable to the disease.

Vatican City last week said it expected to receive enough COVID-19 vaccine doses in the following days to inoculate all of its residents and its workers who live beyond its walls in Rome.

As part of its vaccination plan, the Vatican said it had bought an ultra-cold refrigerator to store doses, suggesting it will use the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, which must be stored at about minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 94 Fahrenheit).

As excerpts of the interview were released, the official Vatican News website reported that the popes personal doctor, Fabrizio Soccorsi, had died of complications from COVID-19.

Soccorsi, 78, was in hospital and was being treated for cancer. He had been the popes doctor since 2015.
